Unwind in Cambodia

Whilst hugely rewarding, the role of international teacher can also be demanding and tiring. Finding opportunities to unwind and revitalize are essential if you are to get the most out of your role and provide the best for your students. Brian Ambrosio discovers an ideal and unheralded place to relax and recharge.

Kampot – relaxing retreat, unspoilt gem.

As an international teacher, there are times when you need a calm, relaxing environment where you can recharge the batteries without the “hustle and bustle”.

A break in Cambodia is usually associated with Siem Reap and the famous Angor Wat, or the fast growing capital of Phnom Penh.  However, an excellent alternative is the lesser known regional town of Kampot in the south of Cambodia.  Famous for its pepper, Kampot sits on a tidal river and is one place in South East Asia  where you can be sure to relax.

While there are many things to do, with a variety of tours to mountains, islands, rivers and caves, the highlight of your time in Kampot is to hire a motor bike or bike and head out into the countryside.  Any ride out of Kampot on a back road will reveal stunning rural lanes with rice paddies, mountain ranges, Cambodian’s unique rural architecture, cows and warm smiles. It really is a great way to unwind and get some fresh country air.

When you have had your time in the countryside, there are a range of restaurants at very reasonable prices in abundance.  While you will enjoy the Cambodian fare, including the famous Amok, you can also try authentic French, Swiss, German, Italian & British restaurants.

Watching the sun go down over the Kampot river with a drink in one of the many restaurants provides a very special and relaxing way to finish the day.
